MSCPCR VISITS CENTRAL WOMEN'S JAIL

The visit to Central Women Jail was conducted by MSCPCR on January 31, 2023. Dr Julie Remsangpuii Fambawl, Member and Pi Varte Varthanpuii, State Child Rights Coordinator had conducted the visit to Central Jail.

The main purpose of the visit was to observe the condition of children of women prisoners and services available. Pu Zosanga, Superintendent, Central Jail, along with the Jailer and the Assistant Jailer were present. The visiting team with the Jail authorities had intensive discussion on the services provided and welfare of children in the institution. Majority of cases registered are under ND&PS Act, followed by MLP Act.  A total of 208 inmates were admitted while the capacity of the facility is only 96.

Presently, there are 15 children who are staying in the facility with their mothers. Out of these 15 children, 8 children are below 2 years (Male – 6 Female – 2) and 7 children are above 2 years (Male – 3, Female – 4).
